RAMANA VIEIRA Back for an encore performance: THE ESSENCE OF FADO at the Coffee Attic in beautiful Maui, Hawaii Journey to the world of Portuguese fado as interpreted by Ramana Vieira, a northern California native of Portuguese descent. Fado is the most widely recognized genre of Portuguese music, dating back to early 19th century, Lisbon. It is characterized by poetic lyrics related to darker elements of love, loss, and sadness. Fado contains Moorish musical roots, and must follow a specific musical structure. Its eruptive ballads evoke the emotion of saudadea yearning or longing for something lost. Fado was no doubt popularized by mournful widows having lost their loves to the sea. Ms. Vieiras work captures traditional fado and influences from the Portuguese diaspora in a musical tapestry that ranges from the whispering, haunting ballads of fado, to American classics and jazzy blues. She also is a prolific pianist and songwriter having penned and composed her own original fados, of which several have been nominated at the International Portuguese Music Awards. She is joined by a masterful ensemble: Jeff Furtado, guitar; Maui's own Andrea Walls on violin and Danny M on bass. Vieira, whose released album, Fado da Vida, has been described by Mundo Portuguese newspaper as the New Voice of Portuguese World Music. She has headlined the world's largest Portuguese festival, the New Bedford Portuguese Feast in Massachusetts, and performed at the 2010 Encontro Festival in Macau. One of her original songs, Unido Para Amar, was played during the 2006 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. Ramana was chosen to donate a private concert as part of a silent auction benefit for the 50th Grammy MusicCares where Aretha Franklin was the honorary guest, and was invited by United States Congressman Jim Costa to perform for the president of the Azores, alongside the internationally acclaimed guitarrista and artist Chico Avila. The opening track of her new album, Cabo Verde, was nomin
